Edit Crookston Castle

WHEN you think of ruined castles, Pollok isn't the first place to spring to mind.
But sitting close to Brockburn Road lies Crookston Castle.
It was built around 1400 by Sir Alexander Steward, on the site of a much older defensive structure dating back to the 12th Century.
Although of architectural
interest, historically its greatest claim to fame is the method of its destruction. It was bombarded by the famous cannon Mons Meg on the orders of James IV in 1489.
Today it stands surrounded by Pollok housing estate.

Ah Yes, Glasgow's perennially overlooked Jewel, architecturally unique and with no shortage of interesting history and associations, it's a wonder more is not made of it as a tourist attraction. Especially true when you consider it is the second oldest building in Glasgow after the Cathedral. Then again, in the cold light of day it's hardly surprising when you consider that it was Glasgow Council who demolished the similarly intriguing Cathcart Castle.
